I called MacWareHouse and the $99 LineLink 14.4k modem (from Technology
Concepts) has a 90-day warranty. They gave me a toll-free number for the
manufacturer, which is 1-800-477-3473. If anyone decides to try this modem
out, please let everyone know what you think!

I saw it, too. It's a LineLink 14.4k. It uses v.32bis. It does not say
anything about v.42bis for quad compression, so I assume it doesn't have it.
It does not say anything about fax (CCIT) support, either. It appears to be
(the first that I've seen) a plain vanilla 14.4k modem. Nothing fancy.
However, the $99 price tag includes MacKnowledge (yippee) and AccuWeather,
which is probably just a modem number to a weather BBS. I don't know for
sure, but they don't even tell you what AccuWeather is.
The LineLink modem is made by Technology Concepts. I know nothing about the
quality or the length of the warranty. You will probably have to purchase
a HS modem cable separately (I have an extra one, if anyone is interested).
That's all I know. Hope it's helpful... and, yes, I'm considering it for
myself. If anyone has actually purchased/used this modem before, please
post a review for the rest of us. Thanks!
BTW, it *is* Hayes AT compatible.

Subject: 40 Mhz Crashintosh SE
I have now carried out my threat and stuck an accelerator and lotsa RAM
into my little SE, so it's now sort of an SF (SE running at approx. IIfx
speeds via 40 MHz 68030 = SF?). Courtesy of Applied Engineering and
their TransWarp. I decided to gamble on their good reputation and I've
got 16 MB of RAM of which the machine only savvies 4, the other 12 to be
located when AE sends me the software they're still developing.
If that were only all of my problems! But instead I have a very fast
little SE that crashes every time I look askance at it, or crosseyed,
or bugeyed, or with eyes in easy focus. Tell me, O Knowledgable Ones,
which of the following suspected problems is most likely to be causing
the little white box to roll over and play dead at the slightest provo-
cation?
1. Sick hard drive. A distinct possibility. I knew I had problems with
the hard drive, but I was waiting for the accelerator so I could see
if by reformatting it for 1/1 interleave ratio would stone the two
birds simultaneously: a faster disk drive that no longer had creepy
probs or else a determination that the drive was history. Instead, I
got mixed messages. First attempt to reformat with Apple HD SC got
me an "unable to reformat" message; second attempt ran fine, and then
I loaded all the software back onto it. When crashes reappeared, I
ran Disk First Aid which said it could not verify the disk, and
MacTools Rescue wasn't fond of it either. Third reformatting attempt
also brought forth "unable to reformat" messages, and fourth was a
success after which I very carefully reloaded software one folder at
a time, checking in betweenst folders with Disk First Aid which gave
disk a clean bill of health. Seeking second opinions, I consulted
NUM, MacTools Rescue, Golden Triangle's DiskMaker, and PLI Formatter
all of which are in the incidental business of verifying disks and
with the exception of DiskMaker passed the 2nd-time-around newly re-
formatted HD; and even DiskMaker passed it on a follow-up try. This
is obviously shaky grounds for a clean bill of health for the disk,
but it is also shaky grounds for condemning it, since whatever the
problem I've got is, it gives major hassles to virtually every soft-
ware imaginable...why not disk-verifying software, too?
2. Sick original motherboard RAM chips. I think there was at least one
bad RAM SIMMS chip amongst the old 2.5 MB on the motherboard, but I
figured they'd be out of the picture with the upgrade. But no, they
still receive a limited set of calls most of which have to do with
the video or so I am told. The assumption of sick SIMMSies on the
Mommyboard is based on loose interp of Sad Macs I saw on screen before
installing the accelerator.
0000 000F and 0000 0001 at various times...
0000 0003 0000 FFFF
3. Sick motherboard. Better not be any such thing. It got replaced
in February. It was seeing ghost disks on internal and external
drives that it couldn't read (not surprising, since they weren't
there). I tend to assume the new one isn't dead already...
4. Loose connections. That would be a nice cheap thing to discover as
the cause of the problem. All the things that had to be snapped in
or out to put in the accelerator, you know. But if so, I have to
believe that prior problems are unrelated to current ones--but the
symptoms (random freezes occurring often) are identical even though
they are occurring much more often with the accelerator installed.
5. Sick accelerator. Same objections as number 4 above, plus the annoy-
ance of new hardware not working. It is still under warranty, of
course.
6. Little fornits running around leaving little green footprints in my
electronic space in order to punish me for not appreciating them as
they run around behind my screen holding worn-out wired together with
their little green teeth (do fornits have teeth?).
It is annoying to have spent this much money to get a fast little white box
that doesn't get things done very fast one crash time is counted. I'm al-
ready sick of my own startup sounds I've had to reboot so often!

The important thing is to be brain damaged meaningfully.
OK, now what do I mean by that?
It may well be that Unix is somewhat brain damaged and as

I believe settext has something to turn these buggers back into quotes.
Notice, if you try to port smart quotes from a word processor into an e

Some recent FAQs have addressed the topic of using other editors
for downloaded TEXT files, rather than the rapidly-reproducing
TeachText. Once the selection of another editor has been made,
it still remains how to get the files to belong to that editor.
This is a FAQ addressed by a small but very elegant program
that is free (source code available).
That program is called ctc and it was in the sumex-aim
libraries the last time I looked.
ctc will Change the Type & Creator
of whatever files are icon-dropped on it. You downloaded
some files and they belong to TeachText (creator: ttro).
Now you want them to open Edit II (creator: EDIT) when you double-click them.
Then change their creator to EDIT and their type to TEXT.
You want to find out what is the creator signature of some
text editor? Drop the application icon on ctc and you will
see that it is 1234 with type of APPL (where 1234 is the four-byte)
creator signature.
Your MPW/FORTRAN program just wrote a Nobel prize-winning
TEXT data file and you want to plot the data in it with KaleidaGraph.
Use ctc to change the creator from "MPS " to "QKPT" and then
you can start KaleidaGraph by double-clicking that great file.
Drop a whole passel of files on ctc at once to change them all
to a particular type and creator.
Change binary files to type TEXT & try to interpret the data fork
as a work of Shakespeare. Better than a Rohrschach (sp?) picture.
Other programs can also change the type and creator (e.g., ResEdit,
Alpha, & DiskInfo) but ctc is very compact and does this one job
nicely. No monster interface. No System 6 support. Needs Sys7.
There will be a quiz on this on Monday.
Come to class with two sharp pencils.

Subject: Apple Higher Ed Gopher Server
APPLE GOPHER SERVER
RThe Apple Computer Higher Education Gopher ServerS is available through
Internet, on a gopher server that is housed at the University of Minnesota.
This program provides an innovative solution to the challenge of
maintaining
ongoing communication with the higher education community. In addition to
Apple information and software, it provides a unique way (using a gopher
server) for users to interact and participate in discussions for seven
academic disciplines. Each discipline has a chairperson, an expert in
their respective
fields, who write articles every other month about technology integration
in
their disciplines. Dialog folders are available for each discipline to
share
information for: 1) Business, 2) Computer Science and Engineering,
3) Library and Information Systems, 4) Mechanical Engineering,
5) Medical and Health Sciences, 6) Schools of Education, and
7) Foreign Language. Other disciplines will be added in the near future.
Apple also provides information on Apple Products, Regional Marketing News,
Apple Corporate News, HED Marketing Info, USA Service, Training and
Support, Macintosh Freeware and Shareware, Disability Solutions, NetNews
Groups of
Interest, Intellimation Software Catalog, Query Publications, and Syllabus
Publications.
We will be adding new information and services to this system on a
continuing basis.
HOW TO GET TO THE APPLE GOPHER SERVER:
To gain access to the Apple Gopher server on Internet, you need to
obtain
Gopher client application from University of Minnesota which may be
downloaded
via annoymous ftp from boombox.micro.umn.edu under the directory
/pub/gopher/Macintosh_Turbo_Gopher. To download use any ftp applications
available. You also need MacTCP driver to work with the Gopher client
application.
Macintosh users need to ftp the Macintosh Turbo Gopher application
"Turbo
Gopher.hqx" to their local drive. Once the client application is copied,
the
user should decompress the application (un-binhex) with Stuffit or
equivalent
decompression tools. Once uncompressed, the user may launch the Gopher
application and the application is configured to connect to the U of MN
campus
wide information system by default.
In the main "Home Gopher Server" window, the user will find
"Information
about Gopher" icon. This icon contains detailed description on Gopher
clients
and servers. Double clicking the icon will drill down and open the
contents of
the folder. You will find Apple's server under "Other Gopher and
Information
Servers... All the Gopher Servers in the world...Apple Computer Higher
Educaton
Gopher Server" path.
Apple's Higher Education Gopher server is also available at
"info.hed.apple.com" Internet domain name address. The user may setup
direct
access by using the pull down menu under "File... Another Gopher Server
at..."
and type in "info.hed.apple.com" to directly access Apple's server. There
are
also book marks and "setup... configure gopher prefernces" menu available
for
automated log-on procedure.
DOS or UNIX users may also retrieve the client application from
boombox.micro.umn.edu.

Dr.Shrooms told me the secret for getting your academic discount coming
to you. Apple has a back to school promotion. Call 1-800-877-4433. I tried
it late at night to see and it said to call between 7AM and 9PM (I guess
Cupertino time). That promotion lasts until Oct.15,1973. Not everything is
on sale, but after all, would they be promoting old IIsi's or Sharp
Wizards? I doubt it.
P.S. I spoke with Barnes and Noble (who seem to be taking over a few
campus bookstores) and reasoned with them. I said, you don't sell computers
right. They said right. But, you sell books about computers, right. And
they said right. You sell also computer software, right? They said right.
I said you want to sell those books and computer software to students with
computers who will know what to do with them, right? They said write. I
said then you want to discuss with the powers that be simply writing that
800 number in the bookstore. They said they would get back to me. That
feels good.
Sometimes, you just got to move and shake, someone has got to and

Subject: Can PC's on Appletalk read data from a Mac HD? How?
We wish to have a few PC's access info on a central Mac hard disk as part
of an information collection function. Other Macs and PC's in the network
will raed and write data to this central store. The central Mac will then
provide analysis of the information gathered from the several outlier units
using Excel.
Is it possible for the PC's to read and write data files in this way to the
hard disk at the center? We are alraedy doing so with other Macs which just
deposit their data as Excel files in folders at central and made accessible
by the Appletalk links.
The PC's have Appletalk cards and are already using the LaserWriters for
output. Is there PC software to let them see the hard disk over the net and
access data there? We can/will use Excel under Windows or the other OS or
if that's not doable, use perhaps Lotus or etc. to generate the data files.
In short, what programs and/or hardware are needed on the PC's and the
central Mac (System 7) to do this sort of thing?
I'll summarize useful reponses for the net. Thank you for your help.

Subject: Change for change's sake?
I must STRONGLY disagree with what Daniel Blystone says about the changes in
the Info-Mac directory structure.
Daniel asks: "Is change good"?
The correct answer is SOMETIMES! or NOT NECESSARILY!
and...
"What if things did not change?"
The correct answer is THEY WOULD STAY THE SAME!
"Really good change must be drastically different."
Says who??? What ever happend to the slow and steady path? I'm not
against drastic change all the time. But to make the blanket statement
above is wrong.
"Then plain just don't like them"
This "Too bad, it's tought!" attitude is not a reasonablr response (as the
prompt of simply "not liking" it is not acceptable either).
"You will get used to them."
We get used to lots of things - but that does NOT make then GOOD!
The point I am trying to make, I guess, is that change is not always
for the best, as Daniel implies. For example: whaty if we just made
one large directory with ALL of the files in it, in NO particular order?
That WOULD be a CHANGE! Would it be GOOD?? I doubt it!!!
I have to agree that the new filing system is inferior. It lacks the
common sense the previous system had - something newcomers to the net
desperately need when trying to wade through all this "muck".
Just my $0.02 worth!

Hmmm. I disagree with Wallace and agree with Miles. I think change
is often needed, frequently productive and somewhat painful, but in
this case I think that Info-Mac has been harmed.
One of the biggest advantages of Info-Mac was that I could scan the new
file additions and decide *before hand* if I wanted to FTP to Sumex-aim
for any files. This gave the advantage of not having the FTP just
to get a list--particularly since FTPing to Sumex-aim takes up time,
uses network bandwith and ties up Sumex-aim. How many times do
we attempt to FTP or Gopher to Sumex-aim and find that the machine is
tied up with local users and won't let others in? Unless you're
trying after 8 pm (Eastern time) or on weekends, the answer is
lots! And the local users have *every* right to be given preference!
The new files were posted with a brief explanation of what each file
was about. That was a tremendous help. Again, it helped me glean the
interesting from the uninteresting. What do you get now?
This is a list of all the files which have been created or modified in the
past three weeks. It is created every night at 2AM Pacific time.ed in the
Flags Size Modified File Name

etc.
Not very helpful and certainly not very Mac like! :-(
Maybe I firing off because I really don't understand the change. If
so, please correct me and I'll put a lid on it. However, if I do
understand the change, IMHO it's a *big* mistake. If Wallace doesn't
like wading through the list of files, fine, put them at the end
of the discussion section. But please, please, please, restore the
old method of listing new files and the brief descriptions right in
Info-Mac. It's not the same without it!

No, you don't need any special connections for Easy View. The trick
is that Easy View creates "views" on text documents such as the InfoMac
Digest. So, save one or more digests in a folder, then create a New
document in Easy View and save that in the SAME FOLDER (that's necessary!).
Then choose Modify from the File menu, select Digest as the type from
the popup menu, and then add the files. Alternately, I think Easy
View comes with a folder pre-created for Info-Mac Digests, so you
can just save them in there and open the existing Easy View document
there as well.
Once again, Easy View does not OPEN text files. It creates View documents
that display the text of files in the same folder as the view.

There should be instructions with EasyView (RTFM), but here is a quick
summary.
You cannot open the text files directly. To create a "view", use the "New"
menu selection. Then you can "Modify View..." to include one or more text
files. There are options to set the up what defines the various sections
(eg. the line of dashes in the Info-Mac digest). You can also set the
"view" to automatically add any new files it finds in a certain directory.
For example, When I save my Info-Mac digest to the digest folder on my hard
disk. I can just open the view and the new digest is automatically added to
the view, and selected for browsing.
There should be example "views" in the package.
Hope this helps.

Hi!
Problem: I want to print (or copy) my Macintosh graphics to EPSF file
format.
I have seen some (printer simulating) utilities that you choose in the
chooser, in order to print your graphics to PICT files. I need something
similar for EPSF files, or a utility that converts the Print dialog
PostScript files to EPSF format. I will then copy the EPSF files to UNIX
and use them in TeX documents.
I have tried to copy the graphics to Canvas, and let Canvas write the EPSF
file, but it doesn't work very well. Original Canvas drawings works fine,
however.
Anyone who knows how to do it?

MacTCP and AdminTCP are of no use to you unless you have your Mac directly
connected to the Internet. I have no idea where you got the need for MacApp
from. Eudora was originally designed to interface with a POP server to
dish-up your mail. But, you CAN use Eudora as an offline reader (matter of
coincidence, I'm testing that kind of configuration now) by downloading your
mail spool file
to your Mac's Eudora Folder and then reading it as though it were a 'real'
Eudora mailbox. Then, there's a program at Sumex
(/info-mac/comm/eudora-as-offline-reader-unix.shar) that you may be able to
modify so you can upload the Eudora 'Out' file and have it parsed and mail.
It was originally written for unix boxes, but with a little C experience, you
might be able to port it.

I noticed this problem on a IIci yesterday. I had attributed the problem to a

Another "fix" is to hang a floppy drive on the SE/30. Even a "dead" 400K

I still find Word 5.1a crashing on Save with similar symptoms (Sys 7.0).
This seems to happen when I quit or close a document with unsaved changes,

So if she saved before she went away, this could be the problem.

Quite frankly, having no new-upload announcements screws the way I work
with the digest. I absolutely abhor trying to connect to Sumex. I abhor
having to dilligently enter "Name:anonymous Password:
avernon1@ua1ix.ua.edu" only to be greeted by "Sorry, too many anonymous
users. Please try again later." I get a similar response using gopher.
Most of the mirrors I know of are hideously out of date or incomplete.
The only way I can effectively use the Info-Mac archive is to extract the
new-file paths and use th em in a shell script that makes my FTP run
around 5 in the morning, when all the other hackers have finally gone to
bed. I would hope that there is some other alternative, like a secondary
list containing the new files, sent weekly to a smaller group of subscribers.
Besides, Wally, have you ever tried a digest browser? They're much better
than having to scroll around in the digest as a whole.

The problem with Pathworks and NSI 1.3 was corrected with NSI 1.3.2 / 1.3.3.
It was a problem with initialising DECnet when using an ethernet board, the
other elements of Pathworks worked fine.
I am currently using NSI 1.4 on my Mac IIci with Internation System 7.1
without
problems. Admittedly the machine was using NSI 1.3.3 before I installed 1.4,
so
it is possible (though unlikely) that this masked new DECnet bugs.

I've been a bit busy and was hoping someone else would pick this up.
I use NSI 1.4 on a C650 the other day. It does solve the problems that
Pathworks has with NSI 1.3.
If you have access to DSNlink their is an artical there that states you should
be using NSI 1.3.2 or later with Q800's, C610's, and C650's with Built in

A side-effect of the upgrade to PageMaker 5.0 is that my most complex

USED to be able to print 'em, after grouping all like items, by turning
off the printer between each page. In other words, I was at the limit
of the printer's 2M of RAM before, and now either PM 5 or the required
switch to the LaserWriter 8.0 driver must've put me over that limit.
According to reviews of the Personal LaserWriter NT, its 2M are supposed
to be expandable to 8M. I notice that the Personal LaserWriter NTR, its
successor, comes with 3M. Does that mean I can just add a 1M SIMM or
replace just one 1M SIMM with a 2M SIMM, or does this model require me
to replace BOTH SIMMs with either 2M or 4M SIMMs? And are the relevant
SIMMs the same as, say, for the IIsi, which was introduced at the same
time (3 years ago next month)? Also, can those of you with nearly three-
year old Personal NTs tell me whether there's ill health soon to come,

one version 2.6.1. I have noticed one minor anomaly which has a trivial work
around. I'm posting this just to save others some time.
On a Quadra 700, Sytstem 7.1, Hardware System Update 2.0, Now Toolbox 4.0.1p
and WYSIWYG Menus 4.0.1:
PopChar must load before WYSIWYG Menus. If it does not, it will not "see" the
current font and will usually put up something in Geneva or Chicago. No other
problems have been encountered, even with my other 50 extensions loaded.

Well, you need a PPP account on your Vax - your standard one won't
work. You'llhave to ask your sysadmin to set that up for you if you
haven't already.
After that, you can get Eudora 1.4 now - it's a little cleaner and
a bit faster, and supports MIME and Apple events to a certain extent.
You don't need AdminTCP - it's for setting and locking MacTCP settings
on user machines so the user can't mess with them. MacTCP can do the
same thing itself, but it lets you mess with the settings as well.
If you can get that PPP account, go for it. It's far nicer than VMS
ever thought of being (ducking the flames - I've never gotten along
with VMS :-)). Also check out Fetch, TurboGopher, NewsWatcher or Nuntius,
WAIS for Mac, and the other cool MacTCP-based programs.
cheers ... -Adam

If you are into BASIC, MacWorld recommended Zedcor's FutureBASIC
602-881-8101. For an easy interface builder to go with FutureBASIC they
recommended PG:PRO from Staz Software 601-255-7085. And as software to help
debug your code the liked SoftPolish from Language Systems 703-478-0181.
Please note, I have never used any of these. I saved the reviews with an
eye towards writing an app or two. Good luck,

Intuit has the annoying practice of not really displaying the true version
of their software. To find out which version of Quicken 4.0 you have,
select About Quicken in the Apple Menu. Then press Option-R (two keys,
Option and the letter R). It will add which release of 4.0 you have.

Subject: Read only hard drives (how to fix?)
At work, we have a Hewlett-Packard SCSI-2 230MB internal drive that gives
us quite a problem. Once in a while when we boot up, the drive acts liek
a read only drive, it's as if we were using an AppleShare volume! Does
anyone know what causes this? We 'fix' it by unplugging the machine for
five minutes and restarting. Anyone know of a better way? Here's the
specs on the Mac:
Quadra 700, 20/230 Internal, 240 External, floptical
Decnet 1.1 ethernet drivers (Yes they work with system 7.1 for us...)
Standard filesharing stuff with system 7.1
Hardware Update 2, Sound Manager 3
Everything's terminated correctly.
Thanks for any ideas you have.

Not only no scred of legal basis, but what they are saying is IMPOSSIBLE.
On the Mac REQUARDLESS of system command-option rebuilds the desktop
file {fileS under system 7.0.x} ERASING ALL pointers or "signature".
They are setting themselves up for a '60 minutes' report, because this
whole thing is reminist of the radar guns that said the house was going
20 MPH and the TREE was going 30 MPH. Only after the radar guns had been
improved so this did not happen did judges start using them again.
SPA better tred softly as if they go TOO far there WILL be a backlash.
All they need happen is their detection software go goofy and say something
has been that has NOT been there at major company. Major Company would
be in its perfect rights to SUE SPA {and likely win} for LIBEL and depending
on what the software does and what they say it does maybe FRAUD.

Yup. RezSearch, by Wade S. Blomgren does exactly this. It may still be at
Sumex. It (at least the version I have - 1.08b) is free. If Sumex doesn't
have it, you could try emailing the author at wade@sdacs.ucsd.edu. The
thing dates back to 1988 but still seems to work.

Unfortunately, neither of our present 'draw' programs, MacDraw Pro and

Canvas 3 can, but can anyone confirm this or suggest something else which
would suit (except Freehand or Illustrator). Many thanks for your help

Subject: Shiva Dial in not releasing PowerPort fax modem
I have a PowerBook 160 with a Global Village PowerPort Gold
internal fax/modem. I am using Shiva's Dial in software, v. 3.7.6,
to dial into a Shiva NetModem to access an AppleTalk net. The Dial
in works fine; however, once I use the Dial in software, I can no
longer use the modem with standard comm. software (I use TinCan),
nor can I use the Global Village fax software to send or receive
faxes: both TinCan and the fax software see the modem as busy.
I have found through trial and error that if I commence a Dial in,
then cancel before the remote modem answers the phone, that I can
free up the modem. This is an awkward work-around, not suitable for
my end users.
Is there a way I can fix this?
Thanks,

In short, upgrade to 4.0e for free, or pay an 'upgrade fee' and get Word 5.1a
which has some advantages over 4.0x, but pales in a number of crucial
respects IMHO to its predecessor. But you have a fast machine so at least
here,
Word 5.1a shouldn't be too much of a hassle to run.

Word 4 doesn't like Quadras either. It can't deal with 68040 caching and
the newer models don't even run Word 4 well with the cache off. Best to bite
the bullet and go to Word 5.1

F. J. Van Wetering,
I think your only option is to upgrade your copy of MS Word. I've
experienced similar problems with MS Word on PowerBooks 180, and
Quadra 800. I think the problem is Word's compatibility with Sys 7.1
I hope this helps!
